Full-time fully funded PhD Studentship

Voice Hearing Research

Birmingham City University - Faculty of Health, Centre for Health and Social Care Research

Ref CHSCR02
The Faculty invites applications for a studentship leading to the award of PhD (directly or via MPhil) in aspects of experience of mental health problems. The studentship will be contributing to an established programme of research into voice hearing. Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates in health care professions and social sciences, including individuals with experience of living with mental health problems.
The supervisory team has an international reputation, and as a member of the Graduate School, you will be joining a research community with a track record of regular peer-reviewed publications and research grant awards, and where past students have been invited to present their work at national and international meetings.
Funding for the studentship is for three years and includes a subsistence grant of £13290 per annum with University fees of £3466 paid for UK/EU students. Applications from candidates outside the EU will incur higher University fees of £9750 reducing the subsistence grant accordingly.
Voice Hearing ResearchThe Faculty of Health has a long-standing interest in voice-hearing with a successful track record of research in this area. We are seeking suitable candidates to work with Professor Mervyn Morris and his collaborative team, Professor Marius Romme and Dr. Sandra Escher, in an exciting opportunity to continue ground-breaking studies into the experience of voice hearing. In addition to a separate study on the effectiveness of groups run by voice hearers, we want to further our understanding of the relationship between voice hearing and life experience. As a student, you will be working alongside NHS partner organisations and other service providers as well as directly with voice hearers and their families. The study will include developing appropriate interview schedules with voice hearers as well as the use of established standardised instruments for the identification of diagnosis and experiences related to voice hearing.
Further InformationThe research project is based with the Community Mental Health Research Team. The student will be part of the Graduate School within the Faculty of Health. Support is provided throughout and we will provide training and practical experience of meeting service providers and people who use services.
