PhD Project: 'Physicist/Chemist'

CiPoC is seeking two candidates for PhD projects centered on the development of new tech nologies and technological platforms for detection and identification of infectious diseases at the point of care (i.e., small clinics, Doctor's office, bedside).
Efficient development of Point of Care (PoC) diagnostic devices requires a highly multidi sci plinary approach: Developing the methods and technologies used in the devices, the devices them selves, systems integration, design for production, clinical testing and regula to ry issues. CiPoC is an interdisciplinary center lead by the GTS company DELTA (Danish Electronics, Light and Acoustics, www.madebydelta.com) with DTU Nanotech and the De part ment of Microbiological Surveillance and Research at the State Serum Institute (SSI-MOF) as strategic members. The center has assembled the broad range of competencies needed for PoC system development.
In line with the interdisciplinary nature of PoC development, both PhD projects will require a candidate who has the ability to work across scientific and technical disci pli nes and a desire to learn and apply a focused systems engineering approach.
PhD project 2 ('Physicist/chemist') will involve the design, fabrication and testing of chips and systems for the on-chip sample preparation using magnetic beads and the read-out based on thermocycling and fluorescence (PCR). Central topics in the work will be Lab-on-Chip, micro fluidics, injection molded plastic systems, thermal control, magnetic manipulation, set-up construction and finite element calculations. The candidate for the position should have a Masters degree in physics or chemistry. Experience in the above topics will be an advantage but not a requirement. The candidate will work closely with biochemists, clinicians, engineers and physicists on developing the PoC system. Therefore, an interest in learning about the biochemical aspects of this multidisciplinary project is essential.
The successful candidates will be employed by DELTA and enrolled at DTU Nanotech with academic supervisors that are members of CiPoC and the DTU Faculty.
Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD students at DTU. The positions are available for a period of 3 years starting in the Fall 2011.

DPhil Studentship in Computational Organic Chemistry with the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca

A DPhil studentship, funded through the EPSRC Doctoral Training Account and a CASE Award with AstraZeneca as the industrial collaborator, is available at the University of Oxford to begin in October 2011. This research project will explore C-H functionalization with predictive computational methods. The research will be carried out under the supervisor of Dr. Robert Paton and the work will be carried out in the Chemistry Research Laboratory at Oxford. Direct functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds is a powerful way to increase molecular complexity and is of great interest to academia and the pharmaceutical industry. This PhD project will investigate C-H functionalization reactions using computational modelling techniques to establish a set of general principles that may be used to design and predict the usefulness of C-H functionalization for a given substrate. The PhD student will have the opportunity to collaborate with world-class theoretical and experimental co-workers in Oxford and AstraZeneca and will have access to the computational resources of the Oxford Supercomputing Centre.
The prospective student should be committed to and motivated by chemistry, with aspirations to pursue a career in academia or the UK chemical industry. Applicants should have, or expect, a first or second class honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics). The studentship will cover the fees and maintenance for 3 years for UK and EU citizens.
The Chemistry Research Laboratory is a state of the art research facility at the University of Oxford. Opened in 2004, it has five floors covering ~17,000 sq.m of laboratory and office space and cost £60 million to construct.
