Gates Cambridge Scholarships

Established in 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge, the Gates Cambridge Scholarships are one of the most prestigious international scholarships in the world.

While at Cambridge, Scholars pursue full range of subjects available at the University and are spread through its departments and Colleges.

Our Alumni are pursuing further study or employment across many sectors of society. Despite the relative youth of the programme, Gates Cambridge Alumni are increasingly taking on leadership roles and applying their knowledge and skills to improve the lives of others.

Swiss Government Scholarships

The Swiss Government, through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), awards various postgraduate scholarships to foreign scholars and researchers:

• University scholarships (Swiss universities, Federal Institutes of Technology as well as Universities of Applied Sciences)
• Arts scholarships (schools of music and fine arts, only for a limited number of countries).

These scholarships provide graduates from all fields with the opportunity to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral research in Switzerland at one of the public funded university or recognized institution. Click here for more information.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

Background

Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's institutions.

Eligibility

Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight institutions, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience, and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.

• City University of Hong Kong
• Hong Kong Baptist University
• Lingnan University
• The Chinese University of Hong Kong
• The Hong Kong Institute of Education
• The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
• The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
• The University of Hong Kong

Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

Fellowship Award

The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year to each awardee for a period of three years. About 135 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in each academic year*. For awardees who need more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided by the chosen institutions. Selection Panel

Shortlisted applications, subject to their areas of studies, will be reviewed by one of the following two Selection Panels comprising experts in the relevant board areas:

Ernst Schering Foundation PhD Fellowships

Introduction

The Ernst Schering Foundation supports outstanding young scientists to conduct basic research in human-biology, medicine (except dentistry) or bio-organic chemistry (including related interdisciplinary fields of research). The Foundation awards about 7 doctoral fellowships annually for students to carry out research projects at prestigious institutes either at home or abroad. The fellowships are awarded for a two-year period. Fellowship amount As of April 2011, the fellowship amount is 1.300,00 EUR/month. Fellowship recipients who live abroad may be eligible for a cost-of-living adjustment, which will be calculated on the basis of the Federal Ministry of Finance rates that are valid at the time of the fellowship award. In addition, fellows receive a monthly materials allowance of 100,00 EUR to cover travel expenses, books, etc. The participation in a scientific conference we support with a total amount of max. 1.000,00 EUR. The children’s allowance is 400,00 EUR/month for the first child; for each additional child, the allowance is 300,00 EUR/month.
