EDLE
European Doctorate in Law and Economics

Programme description:
The European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE) is an excellence Ph.D. programme open to economists and lawyers of high promise preparing themselves for a career in academia or for responsible positions in government, research organizations, and international consulting groups.
The EDLE educational project is carried out in a strong relationship with the research activities of the partners involved: the Department of Economics of the University of Bologna, the Institute of Law and Economics of the University of Hamburg, and the Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics. The Indira
Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) of Mumbai (India) cooperates with the programme by providing research opportunities to interested candidates.
The educational programme requires students to visit all three partner universities. In the first year, from October to May, students stay in Bologna where they attend courses in analytical and quantitative methods. From June to July, they stay in Hamburg, where they attend a 3-week intense Summer
school held by international visiting scholars.
In the second year, from October to March, students stay in Rotterdam, where they participate in dedicated workshops. Candidates who specialize in development law and economics may spend one or two semesters at the IGIDR in Mumbai.
Research topics include all major fields of law and economics, with special emphasis on issues related to contracts, torts, intellectual property, competition, corporate governance, capital markets law, and behavioural law and economics.
The programme is held in English. As a complement to the basic curriculum, students are offered introductory courses in national languages and in the national legal systems (Italian, German and Dutch). Interested students may carry out short interships at the numerous business associates of the network.
Curriculum. The curriculum of the programme is devised to provide advanced and challenging education both to lawyers and economists. Students will be able to choose between basic and advanced courses depending on their
educational background. In the first year, students with a legal background will attend courses at an introductory level in: Mathematics, Game theory, and Statistics, while students with an economics background will attend advanced courses in: Microeconomics, Econometrics, Financial Economics.
All students will also take a brief introductory course on the Italian legal system, and the following dedicated courses, covering the core topics of the programme: Economic analysis of European competition law and
IPRs, Game theory and the law, Modelling European private law, Experimental and behavioural law and economics, European securities and company law.
In Hamburg, students will take a brief introductory course on the German legal system and will attend a Summer School held by international scholars, on topics of special interest.
In the first half of the second year, students will take a brief course on the Dutch legal system and will participate in dedicated workshops where they present their work. From the second semester of the second
year, students will reside at one of the partner univerities, where they receive specialized supervision.
Each student is assigned two supervisors, generally an economist and a lawyer.
Degree
After three years doctoral candidates may defend their thesis and obtain the joint doctoral degree “European Doctorate in Law and Economics” issued by the Universities of Hamburg and Bologna, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.
Eligibility
Admission to the programme is open to applicants who received a diploma or a bachelor and master degree in law or economics, or a comparable university degree (second cycle qualification) required by the partner universities for admission to doctoral studies.
Application
Applications for Erasmus Mundus scholarships should be received by the end of December 2010 (see website for updated information).
Applications shall include:
1) CV with information on academic, professional and other education;
2) two reference letters;
3) a letter of motivation with a prospective research proposal and,

Successful applicants are expected to have a good training in the economic analysis of law.
Basic knowledge of calculus and microeconomics is assumed.

European Doctorate in Economics Erasmus Mundus

Programme description:
The economic crisis is all around us today, touching people of every class in every country, challenging us as economists, and nevertheless showing the need for more understanding of the economy and more internationally integrated solutions. From Europe and from third-countries, the leaders of tomorrow in academia, or in responsible positions in government and business enterprises, need to have the means to understand, tackle, and overcome future economic challenges.
The Universiteit Van Amsterdam (Netherlands), Universität Bielefeld (Germany), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal), Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (France), Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (France), and Università Ca'
Foscari Venezia (Italy) are joining forces to offer a three-year doctoral programme entitled European Doctorate in Economics - Erasmus Mundus (EDE-EM). EDE-EM aims to produce top-quality researchers, who will gain international experience working within the research units with some of
Europe's leading researchers in economics. Students are trained for positions in academia at the international level as well as for responsible positions in government, research organizations, and enterprises.
Admission is based on excellence, with about 25 students expected each year. Competitive scholarships are offered to students from all over the world. Applicants should have a Master's degree or equivalent. This degree does not have to be in economics, although interest in economics is certainly desirable and a strong background in mathematics will be helpful together with fluent written and spoken English. Scientific courses are taught in English. Students will also undertake courses on the cultures and languages of two European countries. High focus is made on research, publication and presentation, with dedicated Jamborees and Summer Schools. The students have the opportunity
to do an additional mobility of one semester in the EDE-EM network that gathers worldwide universities, firms, banks, insurance companies, from Australia, Czech Republic, China, Denmark, Japan, Korea, Russia, South Africa, Tunisia, and large private and public companies. The consortium is fully committed to the placement of students at the end of the programme.
Students have a mobility requirement in two "mobility" universities of the Consortium, two semesters in each. They are jointly supervised by two advisers from the mobility universities and a single defense is organized. After successful completion of the programme, the student could be awarded the
"European Doctorate in Economics - Erasmus Mundus" joint degree, which is officially recognized as a national doctorate from the two mobility universities. This joint degree is agreed upon by four universities of the Consortium. As for the other partner universities, the student is awarded a double degree, which consists of two independent degrees awarded by the mobility universities.

The Centre for Statistics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany, is inviting applications for a

PhD Position in Statistics / Economics

within the Research Training Group (RTG 1644) on "Scaling Problems in Statistics", funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG).

The highly interdisciplinary Research Training Group aims at the solution of current questions in the areas of agricultural economics, genetics, ecology, econometrics and remote sensing by means of statistical methods, and at the development of the latter. It distinguishes itself through a structured graduation program, joint supervision, and a study program consisting of methodologically oriented lectures and interdisciplinary research seminars.

The Research Training Group involves the Institutes for Mathematical Stochastics, Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, Agroecology, Animal Breeding and Genetics, Ecosystem Modelling, Forest Inventory and Remote Sensing, Genetic Epidemiology, Statistics and Econometrics, and the Courant Research Centre on Poverty, Equity and Growth in Developing Countries. The advertised position will be located at the Institute for Statistics and Econometrics, Prof. Kneib (in Göttingen from October 2011).

PhD ProjectProject 4 will investigate the impact of different covariate scales on model choice and variable selection. Both model choice and variable selection are of high relevance when analyzing empirical data based on regression models but have been shown to be nontrivial tasks when covariates are measured on highly diverse scales. These problems are even more prevalent in complex regression models such as mixed models or geoadditive regression. In this project, the model choice and variable selection performance in such types of regression models will be studied and suitable strategies to overcome problems arising from the different covariate scales will be developed. The project will also include the application of the developed approaches in complex regression data arising for example in development economics and other areas of interest involved in the Research Training Group.

RequirementsThe successful candidate will hold a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in statistics, mathematics, or in related fields with strong quantitative skills (including programming skills).

Conditions of employmentThe position will start October 1, 2011, and is awarded for up to 3 years. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (75% E13 TV-L; gross income per month € 2330 - 2590).
