PhD Studentship
Computer-Based Prediction of Toxicity
Liverpool John Moores University - School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences
A Ph.D. studentship, for three years, is offered in computer-based toxicology, focusing on predicting the potential human health effects of exposure to cosmetic ingredients. The studentship will be located in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University. Liverpool John Moores University is internationally recognised for its work in computer-based (in silico) techniques and predictive toxicology, developing models with the overall aim of reducing the need for animals in toxicological testing.
The PhD Studentship is in the area of computer-based prediction of the potential effects of chemicals to humans. Funding is available for three years to develop computational models. These are based around the understanding of the relationship between chemistry and toxicology, and the use of computer-based technologies to create (often simple) models. Such approaches can be as fundamental as finding groups of similar molecules and determining the effects of molecules within the group. Other modelling techniques include the development of (quantitative) structure-activity relationships ((Q)SARs). The project may also involve collating and checking toxicity data from various sources including regulatory agencies and industry. As a result, part of the project may involve travel to the USA (Washington DC region). This project is funded in part by the EU / Cosmetics Europe COSMOS project (www.cosmostox.eu). The overall aim of the COSMOS project is to develop computational models of toxicity, with an emphasis on effects to humans following repeated exposure. The successful candidate will be expected to assist in project reporting and planning within the University, and report to the Project Consortium, the Seurat-1 Cluster and at other meetings as appropriate. In addition s/he will be expected to contribute to other on-going research projects in the area of computer-based prediction of toxicity as appropriate and relevant.
General Information:
The student will register initially for the award of MPhil and will be expected to transfer to PhD registration within 12-15 months (subject to satisfactory progress and approval of a transfer report).
A tax-free PhD stipend is available for three years and starts at £13,590 in the first year rising to approximately £13,800 in the third year. Tuition fees will be paid for EU students (non EU students will have to fund the difference between home fees and international fees). The anticipated start date is 17 September 2012 or thereabouts.
Applicants are expected to have:
1.   at least an upper second class Honours degree (or equivalent) in any suitable biological, chemical, biochemical, toxicological, informatics or computational science, or a related field; or
2.   a relevant Masters degree.

1.   A covering letter outlining your interest in, and relevant experience for, the position (maximum one page). For non-EU candidates there must be a clear statement explaining how you would expect to pay the difference in EU and overseas fees.
2.   A C.V. (maximum two pages) including the names of two referees.

PhD Studentship
Design and synthesis of bromodomain (BRD) inhibitors.
University College London - School of Pharmacy
 Identification of new chemical probes for the BRDs in order to explore the role of these epigenetic proteins in oncology and other diseases.
Project Description:
This programme will be focussed upon the identification of new small molecule drug candidates for bromodomain (BRD) epigenetic mechanisms and pathways.
·        To identify potent and selective inhibitors of BRD proteins.
·        To deliver a chemical probes for selected BRD proteins.
·        Application of a preferred BRD chemical probe to underwrite and establish a fully integrated drug discovery research programme to treat human disease of high medical need in the area of oncology.
Main Methods and Techniques to be employed: This studentship will provide training in modern drug discovery. Core skills to be developed will include: (i) Medicinal chemistry principles in the design of bioactive drug candidates; (ii) Synthetic chemistry methods for efficiency in route design to target compounds; (iii) Understanding of broader principles of modern drug discovery e.g. ADME, safety, target validation, screening methods, intellectual property etc, and their interplay in successful drug design.

PhD Opportunities for International Overseas Students with Scholarships available against fees  
Projects are available in Research Groups allied to Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Pharmacy, Optometry and Psychology.
Applications are invited for three year Research Scholarships to be undertaken in the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University to start in October 2011 or January 2012.
The School of Life and Health Sciences is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to pursue cutting-edge research. In the 2008 RAE, 85% of the research in the School of Life and Health Sciences was ranked as being of international quality, and the School was ranked 3rd out of 61 UK University submissions to Allied Health Professions and Studies for quality and volume of research. The School currently has a research income of about £8m, with approximately 90 research students, (part time and full-time), who are registered in the School each year.

Financial Support
The projects are available to students meeting the University and School academic entry requirements and scholarships for international students will be awarded competitively on merit. The scholarships for international students will cover payment of £6,000 per year towards tuition fees against the international fee of approx. £13,400 per year.

  • Applicants should have or expect a good Bachelor (Hons.) Degree (either first class or upper second class) or hold an MSc in a relevant discipline.
  • The English Language requirements are a minimum score of 620 (260 minimum in computer test) in TOEFL OR IELTS with minimum marks of 6.5 in each section and an overall band of 7.0.
  • The Scholarships are for 3 years, subject to a satisfactory progress review at the end of the first year, and areavailable for October 2011 or January 2012 registration.
