'Multiscale Methods In Spatial Inference'

The four-year studentship provides the opportunity for research, towards a PhD in Mathematics, on the analysis of statistical inference problems in the context of spatial tracking.  The research is motivated by the problem of identifying large numbers of moving sources of radio emissions and will be undertaken in collaboration with SELEX Galileo Ltd.
Expressing the tracking problem in the framework of Bayesian statistical inference it is immediately apparent that the resulting optimisation problem will be far from convex.  The posterior probability will have many local maxima and the research will pursue complexity reduction by using appropriate filters defining a hierarchy of sub-problems at different scales to enable an efficient numerical solution.  This research will provide the opportunity for applying developed methods to communication-band data with SELEX-Galileo Ltd. 
Students with a more theoretical inclination would be invited to investigate closely related mathematical problems which are motivated by the multiscale structure of the data.  High dimensional optimization problems with many local extrema can be studied with powerful tools from variational calculus, such as Γ-convergence. A systematic application of multiscale methods to Bayesian Statistics can provide a rigorous mathematical derivation of coarse grained variables that represent the most important information content of the data. A systematic exploration of this approach would be highly desirable and pave the way for treating many important related problems.
Ideal applicants for the studentship have completed a 4-year Mathematics education with a first class degree.

Theoretical Studies of Metamaterials

Metamaterials are manmade media with all sorts of unusual and useful functionalities (varying from negative refractive index to optical invisibility cloaks and quantum effects) that can be achieved by artificial structuring smaller than the length scale of light. This innovative and interdisciplinary research programme is funded for six years with the aim of developing a new generation of switchable and active photonic media. It will capitalize on state-of-the-art facilities within the University's new cleanroom and laboratory complex will be essential to the programme to create a world-leading centre of research on Nanostructured Photonic Metamaterials at Southampton.
The project (42 months) concerns theoretical and numerical studies of electromagnetic properties of metamaterials. We investigate strong collective interactions between the nano-scatterers, the effects of disorder and using superconducting circuits to create highly nonlinear systems. Funding is available for UK residents/EU nationals who have stayed in the UK for more than three years.
The work will be in a close collaboration with experimentalists crossing normal boundaries between several science and engineering disciplines. Applicants must have a first or upper second class degree (or equivalent) in physics, applied mathematics or engineering from a recognised university, and a solid grounding in Mathematics.

ALGANT-DOC
Joint Doctorate in Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory
Duration: 3 years
Programme description:
The ALGANT-DOC joint doctoral programme was established after the positive experience of the integrated Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in Algebra, Geometry and Number theory. The programme is a collaborative scheme creating ideal conditions for the production of high-level research under joint
supervision at, at least, two partner institutions among the universities of Bordeaux, Chennai, Leiden, Milan, Montreal, Padua and Paris Sud.
Supervision will be provided by staff who are very active in research and the doctoral candidates will profit from the many links staff enjoy with research centres throughout the world. Research activities will be carried out in well-equipped and welcoming facilities. The mathematics departments and doctoral schools, which will host the doctoral candidates organise regular seminars and conferences specifically aimed at young researchers.
Doctoral candidates who will have successfully completed the programme will be awarded a double degree, and/or a joint degree composed of two nationally recognised doctoral degrees issued by two consortium institutions, completed by a diploma supplement.

BackgroundThe Structured PhD Programme in Simulation Science is a new multi-institutional collaborative PhD programme involving University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Queen's University Belfast, the National University of Ireland, Galway, and supported by the Irish Centre for High End Computing.
The SimSci Fellowships are funded under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) Cycle 5 which is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Additional funded places on the Structured PhD Programme in Simulation Science will be available through other national and international Research Projects.
Terms and conditions
  • All PhD candidates must hold a minimum of a 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline
  • These SimSci Fellowships are fully funded for 4 years and include a stipend of 16,000 Euro per year together with an allowance for research travel and expenses and cover fees for EU students. Non-EU candidates will be liable for additional fees and will need to provide evidence of support for these prior to acceptance.
  • Applicants whose primary language is not English should have attained a reasonable command of English
