MSc Scholarship for UK and EU Students

Programme Description 
In a joint research project between Watford Community Housing and the University of Hertfordshire Department of Engineering and Technology we invite applications for an M.Sc by Research student to undertake research into offsite manufacturing methods for the provision of affordable housing. This one-year project requires an M.Sc student to undertake a collaborative research project with support from University academic and industrial supervisor(s).
The project will involve researching methods for offsite manufacture of housing to produce low-cost, high-quality, affordable housing, and carrying out a comparative study of six existing sites that are being developed in Hertfordshire using different construction methods. This will require close working with the client (Watford Community Housing) and with designers, project managers, contractors and end-users.
Start date:  October 2018 or as soon thereafter as possible.
Duration: One year

Stipend: A University research studentship of £14,777 will be payable for one year from the start of the research project. The student will be registered for a research degree of M.Sc by Research and will also receive a maximum contribution of £4,695 towards their individual tuition fees that is equivalent to the Home/EU student fee in each year of registration.
Eligibility 
The successful candidate’s CV and application will need to demonstrate the following:
Essential 
  • Educated to degree level or to an equivalent standard in an engineering, construction or planning discipline;
  • Experience of undertaking project activity of a sustained nature and of planning and organising work;
  • Ability to work on own initiative;
  • Communication and writing skills;
  • Good IT skills, including MS Office;
  • Effective team worker;
  • Ability to work in collaboration with others, in teams or on projects;
  • Willingness and ability to work flexibly and to adapt to changing demands, including to travel to meet other team members.
Desirable
  • Upper 2nd class or above Undergraduate degree;
  • Experience in housing construction methods, offsite manufacture or local planning processes.
