Engineering PhD Scholarship

PhD Studentship

Remote Magnetic Inspection Techniques

University of Leeds - School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Applications are invited for a full time, industrially sponsored PhD research studentship in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Leeds. The studentship is for a period of 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory performance and provides payment of UK/EU tuition fees at a rate £3,732 plus an annual tax free stipend of £13,324, or for non-EU students international fees of £15600 plus a tax free stipend of £1456.
Project Description: The University of Leeds, along with industrial partners, is currently conducting research into a novel remote magnetic industrial inspection technique. The aim of the technique is to provide remote inspection for the assessment of steel infrastructure. Periodic monitoring of aging infrastructure is important to prevent catastrophic failure and maintain service.
This studentship offers an outstanding opportunity for a graduate engineer or scientist to be involved in a novel interdisciplinary instrumentation research project, and will encompass the following areas:
  • Design of instrumentation electronics hardware and software.
  • Inverse problems for reconstruction of observed data.
  • Laboratory and field trials of prototype instrumentation.
The PhD student will be expected to spend some time performing field trials at international facilities. In addition it is also expected that the successful candidate will undertake travel to participate in national and international conferences and workshops.
Enquiries: For informal enquiries please contact Dr Steven Freear or Dr David Cowell by email atd.m.j.cowell@leeds.ac.uk.
