PhD Studentship
EPSRC - Interactive Systems Modelling for Low Effort Demand Energy Reduction Domestic Energy Consumption
Loughborough University
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the area of systems engineering, modelling and simulation to support research into domestic energy consumption. This full time studentship starts in July 2011, providing a stipend of £13,590 per annum plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for three years.
The studentship is part of an exciting large interdisciplinary EPSRC funded project (with industrial partners E.ON, AlertMe and O2) - Low Effort Energy Demand Reduction (LEEDR) - focused on domestic energy demand reduction. This is an exciting opportunity to develop PhD research from a systems perspective while participating in an interdisciplinary project that addresses questions central to the concerns of energy reduction in the home and related to lifestyle practices. The PhD student will be supervised by Professor Roy Kalawsky - Director of the Research School of Systems Engineering. The PhD student will work closely with other project members as part of a larger interdisciplinary team from design and engineering disciplines.
The LEEDR project will collect real-time energy usage and ethnographic data from 20 homes over an 18-month period, with the intention of developing energy reducing intervention strategies for the home. The research will involve developing interactive approaches/technologies to help people manage their home energy usage more effectively.
The student will develop their PhD research within the context of EPSRC LEEDR project.
Candidates should have a good degree in subjects related to but not exclusive to systems engineering, software engineering, computer science or human factors. Candidates with experience of developing web-based technologies would be particularly welcome.
To discuss this position please contact Professor Roy Kalawsky (r.s.kalawsky@lboro.ac.uk), for further information about the application process contact Sharon Want (s.want@lboro.ac.uk).
Applications must be submitted using the research degree application form (athttp://www.lboro.ac.uk/prospectus/pg/essential/apply/index.htm), by e-mail to Sharon Want (s.want@lboro.ac.uk)
