Increased location functionality and data security in mobile networks

Queen's University Belfast - School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Increased location functionality and data security in mobile networks
There is increased interest in providing much more location-based accuracy in mobile networks and also providing increased levels of security as wireless networks are particularly vulnerable as transmissions are freely available to eavesdroppers. The proposed research is looking to apply programmable hardware functionality to create innovative solutions to address both of these issues. This includes novel beamforming solutions to provide accurate location detection and novel data security solutions applied at the physical layer of communications to provide enhanced security. The research will use innovative field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based technology in the form of the WARP hardware and NETFPGA-10G hardware.
There are a number of studentships available which will provide funding for international candidates. The candidates would ideally have expertise/interest on one or more of the following: wireless communications, physical layer communications, FPGA implementation.
Academic Requirements:
A minimum 2.1 honours degree or equivalent in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or relevant discipline is required.
General Information
This 3 year PhD studentship covers approved tuition fees and a maintenance grant of approximately £13,590 and is open to international students. The PhD studentship normally commences on 1 October 2012 however, this could be available immediately, or delayed, for suitable candidates.
Applicants should apply electronically through the Queen's online application portal at:https://dap.qub.ac.uk/portal/
